Poem: "Passed"

I remember...
I remember days of
     innocence and wide-eyed wonder,
Earth-shattering candy,
     And awe at claps of thunder.

We couldn't wait...
We couldn't wait to grow up
     To become women and men.
What a cruel, cruel joke;
     Never have those days again...

Youth is not wasted...
Youth is not wasted even on
     The young anymore.
They turn their backs on childhood,
     While we long for days of yore.

It's sadly true...
It's sadly true, that we don't
     Appreciate it at the time;
Look back in longing, reminisce,
     Express it in rhyme...
