Hairstyles and Attitudes

My hair has certainly been played with. My mom used to cut my hair for the longest time, and it was generally sort of a Beatles moptop, until I decided to go short 'n spiky sometime during high school. While I've gone through several styles since then, I always seem to return to the basic spike, until I get bored with it again... It's also gotten darker over the years. I started life with straw-blond hair, the kind that camera flashes glare off. I'm still blond, though. :)

When I attended the Rutgers Dean's Summer Scholars Program in 1987, I met Barbara Aspeling, who promptly took me to her room and styled my hair using her roommate Noelle Kocot's Stiff Stuff. This was my introduction to this amazing product, which I've turned to again and again when I've wanted a hard wet spiky look. The next morning, Noelle graciously gave me the bottle.

I've cut my own hair a few times, generally with drastic results. ;) Something to do... While at Glassboro State College, I put a new twist on the late-'70s punk method of spiking hair (which, for many, was accomplished using sugar water; as it dries, it stiffens the hair). I'd make up a glass of Tang™, dip my brush in it, and style away at my spiky 'do. No, it didn't turn my hair orange, nor do I recall attracting any more insects than usual. Heh-heh...

As I got older, I found myself getting bored with my appearance after a while. I let my hair grow long, long enough to wear a ponytail, then cut it quite short after a few months. I grew a moustache, a beard, a goatee... Inspired by science-fiction author Larry Niven's Wunderlanders, I created an asymmetrical goatee: a mustache on one side of my face, and a beard on the other. This elicited shock and even consternation in some people, as did my shaved eyebrows three Halloweens in a row (for two, I dressed as Pink from "The Wall," for the third I was Ziggy Stardust). When Barbara and I made plans to see the reunited Sex Pistols, I got my hair buzzed and spiked the way Johnny's was at the time. I've had my hair slicked back, falling in my face Veronica Lake-style, long like Tom Petty's... I've used Sun-In™ to enhance my blond highlights, but I haven't dyed it yet (and yes, Barbara, there is a difference) and I don't believe I ever will.

Loud fast rules, man!

The infamous asymmetrical beard ;)
